Phantom XR 40 Rotary aircraft engine.
|
The Wankel style of
Rotary engine has been around for a number of years now and has been
used successfully by several manufacturers including Golden Circle
on the T Bird and Sunrise Aircraft on the two seat Hiperlight.
This year at Sun N
Fun Phantom Aeronautics of Three Rivers Michigan had a rotary engine
on display that has been installed on one of their Phantom aircraft.
The engine is built by AXIRO engines in Germany for go cart
application. In this application the single rotor version of the
engine produces 53 HP and has a proven reliable TBO of 1,000 hours.
In the aircraft
application the engine will be de-rated to 40 HP and the TBO will
initially be reduced to 500 hours. Phantom will be mating the engine
to a 3.4 to 1 belt reduction drive. The total weight of the engine
with drive and all accessories required by the engine to operate is
approximately 65 lbs.
The engine has a
single CDI ignition system, a 24 volt charging and electric start
system and uses a Tillotson Pumper style carburetor.
