If you are new to ultralight or lightsport aviation, then you are probably doing some research to find out about something that you have read or heard about, either in print or on the web.

In most cases you are looking for something that fits into what is called a "niche market." Which means you are looking for something to fill a special need, that most "BIG manufacturers", don't have the time or inclination to bother with.

This leaves the door wide open for entrepreneurs like Paul Mather of M-Squared Inc. Aircraft, to walk in and supply you with just what you are looking for!

This year at Airventure 2010 Paul was at the show displaying and flying his line of M-Squared Inc. aircraft, and while he didn't have anything new at the show, his company was in the process of bringing something out to fit one of those "niche markets".

That something is a certified float plane, the Breese II, for the LSA market, with the first three planes to be delivered to customers the end of September 2010. The certified float plane version of the M-Squared Inc. Breese II will be available with the Full Lotus Floats, but shortly after that Paul anticipates certification of the KeyWest floats as well.

While the Breese II has been flying on floats for a number of years as an experimental aircraft these three aircraft will be the first certified to meet the ASTM standard for light sport aircraft.

Paul who have been involved with float planes since the mid 70's, has moved forward with the certification because of the high demand for a ready to fly, two place float plane, that can be used for higher in training as well as the tourist sightseeing style of environments. M-Squared Inc. currently offers both fresh water and a salt water mounts, with the major difference being the addition of stainless steel components.

The first three planes are powered by the Rotax 582, and are straight float planes with no retract system. Paul reports that equipped this way the plane has a climb rate of about 650 feet per minute and uses between 4 and 6 gallons of fuel per hour.

Working out of the Birmingham office, M-Squared Inc. is an authorized DAR for amateur built experimental, experimental lightsport aircraft and certified light sport. Paul indicates he currently covers Alabama, Mississippi and north Florida doing certification on all types of experimental aircraft, from Lancairs and RV's right down Kolb style aircraft.
