CGS Hawk
single place part 103 legal ultralight aircraft
|
In the early 80's manufacturers flying their
single seat ultralight aircraft at Sun N Fun went into panic
mode! The reason? The FAA showed up and were threatening to
start weighing ultralights to see if they met the legal part
103 weight of 254 lbs.
To attempt to meet the weight factories started pulling foam
out from seat cushions, replacing tube and tire wheels with
plastic ones, pulling battens out of wings, removing air
filters, changing props, I even saw one removing two belts
from a four belt drive system! But one manufacturer, CGS
Hawk didn't do anything! In fact they went out and purchased
several bathroom scales, and sat their plane on them, just
to prove that they met part 103 legally.
That's right with a full enclosure, true three axis control,
and flaps the CGS Hawk in the early 80's proved it's self as
a true ultralight. |

Well over the years like it's designer the
little single place Hawk has put on a few pounds! So at Sun
N Fun the new owner of CGS Aviation made a pledge to the
ultralight community that by Airventure 2010 he would have
two aircraft in his stable, that would once again fit into
Part 103. A single place CGS Hawk tail dragger and a single
place CGS Hawk tri-cycle gear. Sure enough the factory had
on display and were flying two CGS Hawk's that, even
equipped with brakes, electric start, and instruments meets
the U.S. ultralight definition. It was accomplished by going
back to the basic Hawk design of the 80's and then adding a
modern light weight engine and re-drive system.
Power is supplied by the MZ 34 by Compact Radial out of
Vernon, British Columbia Canada. The engine puts out between
28 and 30 HP, and when equipped with a two blade IVOPROP
gives the single place Hawk a cruise speed of just over 50
mph, a climb rate of 300 to 500 ft. per minute depending on
temperature and altitude, stall with flaps coming in at
below 30 mph.
The factory is offering the ultralight version as either
ready to fly aircraft, built at the factory, or in kit form.
They also offer experimental amateur built aircraft in both
single and two place versions, as well as a two place light
sport aircraft. The factory also reports that flight testing
is under way of a two seat amphibious float plane.
