Matthieu de

Airventure

I wonder if the early pioneers of ultralight
aviation like John Moody, Holmer Kolb, Dick Eipper, or Bob
Lovejoy ever envisioned that the craft they help introduce
into the sport of aviation, as grass roots, fun flying
machines would traverse the U.S., Canada, North and South
America or the world!
While John might not have considered flying
his EZ Riser from coast to coast, the thought must not have
entered the minds of Jack McCornack and Jim Campbell.
It almost seems since I have been covering
the sport pilots have taken to challenging their craft,
piloting skills, and Mother Nature!
This year was no exception with Matthieu de
Quillacq making the trip in his CH-7 Kompress helicopter
from France to Oshkosh for Airventure. Navigating the
unknown was not a new challenge for Matthieu, having already
flown his Kompress CH-7 and won a point to point navigation
contest without the use of a GPS! |

Nor does flying long distances in a small
helicopter phase him since he has delivered CH-7's to
customers in African and behind the Great Wall of China. The
flight took eight days, covered over 5,000 mile from France
to Airventure and during the long lonely portion of the
flight over water he did find himself "looking and listening
God."
His craft was powered by a Rotax 914 four
cylinder, four stroke turbocharged engine and was fitted
with an extra fuel tank where the second seat would normally
be located. Matthieu is planning
to fly up through the U.S. to Canada, then
over to Russia and back home.
