Advanced Aviation Explorer
This is the aircraft US Aviator bought when we decided
we needed a sturdy, two-place STOL bird. So far, we've not been the least
bit disappointed.
Introduced at
Sun 'n' Fun '90, the Explorer is a bolt-and-rivet-together,
two-seat tandem, utility aircraft. It can be an ideal rough
terrain vehicle and has optional skis and floats. |

The unrestricted
visibility also make it ideal as a platform for sightseeing, photography,
prospecting, fish spotting, traffic and crowd control. It can even be used on
the farm for hauling parts or low volume herbicide and pesticide spraying.
The Explorer is available with two power plants, the 52-hp
Rotax 503 and 65-hp 582 dual ignition dual carburetor, upright-mounted engines.
Take-off distance is 225 feet and it climbs at 650 fpm to a cruise of 50 to 65,
depending on the load and powerplant used. VNE is 85 mph.
All the performance
figures are measured with full fuel at gross weight for sea level, standard day
conditions from a grass surface. The wingspan is 29 feet 8 inches; length 23
feet 6 inches; height 7 feet
The Explorer is made of aircraft quality aluminum tubing,
sheet metal and AN hardware. Estimated building times 125 to 150 hours.
Zoom Report: This is a very exciting two-place aircraft
with big barn-door flaps, a beefy gear, great handling, and positively docile
ground behavior, this bird is destined to be one of the biggest sellers in the
biz.
Yes, it looks a lot like the Max-Air Drifter, but the designer has made
numerous improvements. Flat out, the
Explorer is a great fun flying aircraft.
USA Aircraft Ratings:
Design/Engneering A-. Very well engineered.
Ground Handling B+. Rugged gear, good X-W abilities. Flight
Characteristics: A.
Kit/Plans: C. Manuals were not that great.
"Bang For The Buck": A-. An outstanding trainer or play-toy. Final Grade:
B+. We liked it... and bought one.
