One of the things about ultralight aviation
is that when someone says "it can't be done" it's like
waving ared flag in front of a bull - and we get right at
"getting it done."
Many have said that you can't build a
U.S. legal ultralight with a metal frame weighing only 254
lbs, that looks and flies like a "real aeroplane."
Well Murphy Aircraft showed at Airventure
2002 that it can be done, with out sacrificing, strength, or
performance. Murphy introduced their JDM-8, fresh from it's
first award winning performance at the Arlington Airshow.

The JDM-8 is a true U.S. legal ultralight which features an
aluminum semi-monocoque fuselage, aluminum spars, wing
ribs, with aluminum tube construction used in the tail
section, all covered in conventional fabric.
The JDM-8's wings fold upwards for
storage. According to the factory building times should be
in the 500 to 700 hour range. Currently two models are being
offered, one to meet the U.S. market and another to fit the
Canadian/U.S. experimental/amateur built/ultralight market.
The basic difference is the wingspan - 24
feet for the U.S. ultralight - versus 20 feet and engine
power 20 hp versus up to 80 hp. As flown at Airventure with a 277 Rotax
engine of 28 hp the plane lifted off in about 200 feet, and
climbed out at around 400 feet per minute. The next year it
was fitted out with a 60 HP 2 cylinder HKS engine and
climbed out like a home sick angel. |
