Light Sport Aircraft Pilot is a directory of aircraft that generally fit
into what are described as ultralight aircraft, advanced ultralight
aircraft,
light sport aircraft, experimental light sport aircraft, experimental
aircraft, amateur built aircraft, ELSA or homebuilt
aircraft in the United States and Canada. These include
weight shift aircraft, more commonly known as trikes,
powered parachutes, and powered para-gliders.

Okay, we've looked at so some
of affordable lightsport aircraft, some low wing all metal
aircraft, and we still haven't found we are after.
So maybe we're looking for a high wing, side by side
seating, composite carbon fiber aircraft in a tractor
configuration!
There were a number of these at the Midwest LSA show,
including the Jabiru J230, the Navigator 600 LSA, the Sirius
TL 3000, the FK 9 MK IV, and the CTLS.
Control systems on the Flight Design CTLS, Navigator 600
LSA, and Jabiru 230 are standard stick and rudder controls,
while the Sirius TL 3000 uses a dual yoke control.

That is the aircraft has a system that comes
out of the dash with a yoke or half steering wheel, that the
pilot back or pushes for elevator control, and turns the
steering wheel left or right, to activate the ailerons. It
is also available with just a stick on the end of the
control arm for pilots wanting a stick style feeling.
The Sirius TL 3000 is one of the newest added
to the approved LSA list. This aircraft is manufactured by
the same people that make the Sting lightsport aircraft, TL
Ultralight out of the Czech Republic. This plane has the
outside look and feel to it of a 172 but is actually bigger
inside! This plane Ground handling is via a steerable
nosewheel.
The Jabiru J230 is manufactured in
Australia, and is brought into the U.S. in kit form and then
finished off by Jabiru U.S.A. who then assembles it as a
lightsport aircraft or sells it in kit form under the
amateur built experimental rules. In Australia, the Jabiru
J230 is a four seat aircraft! This same aircraft is brought
into the United States and sold as a two seat lightsport
aircraft, with the space that would normally have two seats
located in it now available as storage. The Jabiru J230 also
has a third door to allow access to this area. Ground
control is via a steerable nosewheel.
The Flight Design CTLS currently the
market leader in light sport aircraft sales in the United
States. Flight Design's has an extensive dealer network set
up across the United States, to offer sales, service, parts
and accessories. The CTLS features a 49 inch wide cabin,
which is 10 inches wider than 172. It also has a steerable
nosewheel and one of only a few lightsport aircraft, that is
currently certified for float application.
The Navigator 600 LSA by 3 X-Trim
manufactured in Poland also has a nice wide comfortable
cabin, with lots of storage space. It uses a steerable
nosewheel for ground handling. The Navigator 600 LSA has
been used, or a number of years in both Canada and the
United States in a training environment and has proven
itself to be very durable aircraft.
The FK Light Planes FK 9 MK IV which
features an all composite exterior, but uses a welded steel
structure under the composite. The latest model FK MK IV has
recently redesigned to give more cabin room and storage
area. The FK 9 MK IV has a folding wing option for ease of
storage and is another aircraft that I have recently seen
flying on floats. Ground handling is via a steerable
nosewheel.
Power for the Sirius TL 3000, Flight
Design CTLS, Navigator 600 LSA is supplied by the Rotax 912
ULS, 100 hp four stroke aircraft engine. While powered for
the Jabiru J230 is supplied by the Jabiru 3300, 120 hp
six-cylinder, air cooled, direct drive aircraft engine.
Jabiru is the only lightsport aircraft manufacturer that I
know of that produces both a lightsport aircraft and an
aircraft engine. |
