into what are described as ultralight aircraft, advanced ultralight
aircraft,
light sport aircraft, experimental light sport aircraft, experimental

Ultralights, light sport, experimental

I have been
making the trip down to EAA's Sun N Fun now for over 30
years. I have looked forward to the trip to meet old friends
that I may see only once a year, to see what is new, to see
what has changed, and to keep abreast of what is happening
in a sport that I so dearly love.
The introduction of Sport Pilot and the Light Sport Aircraft
classification have dealt a severe blow to affordable, fun
flying, grass roots aviation.
There are several reasons for this. The first is the loss of
affordable two place ultralight trainers, which resulted in
the loss of ultralight training facilities, and ultralight
instructors.
With the two place training exemptions, membership in
ultralight pilots associations has fallen, since there are
no longer instructors teaching new students. Which of course
has resulted in declining aircraft sales. |

So it was with some
trepidation that I again made the trip down to Sun N Fun
2010. On arrival my worst fears seemed to have been
realized. In years past Paradise City was a bee hive of
activity as vendors hurried to find their alotted space, and
set up for the upcoming show. This year things were
different! Where there were once rows and rows of vendors
stretching from one end of the Paradise City to the other,
this year there were just two rows covering only one end of
the field!
The good news was that the vendors who made the trip have
been at the core of our industry for quite sometime, and by
all accounts feel that they have weathered the storm and are
looking forward to a prosperous future. Like a forest that
has appeared to have suffered a devastating fire, the fire
in fact helped to clear out some of the underbrush, and now
the forest can once again begin to grow.
Let's hope that the folks that are managing the forest
recognize that this is a time of growth, and act accordingly
with a new two place training program aimed at aircraft that
the grass roots aviator can afford to buy, build, own and
fly. |
