The Zippy Sport, a plans-only design, first debuted at
Oshkosh '83 in the Western Flyer design contest. From 1986
on, the Zippy has pretty much been a guinea pig -although
Green Sky Adventures prefers to use the term "test
platform."
Regardless the Zippy uses a Rotax 503 - 582 power plant, gearbox, and
propeller combination (in case you didn't guess, the
company is a Rotax service outlet America's
oldest, no less and also does HKS engines sales, service and
installations.). |

They tell us for the Zippy
Sport's 10th birthday, they gave it a new 65-hp Rotax 582, a
type C 3:1 gearbox, automatic high altitude carbs, an oil
injection system, Rotax Flydat engine "The Zippy really
doesn't need 65 hp, but she deserves it." You may also elect
to use the Rotax 503 if you prefer.
The Zippy Sport is 17.8'
long and 5.0' tall with
a wingspan of 26.3' (wing area is
100 sq ft). It weighs 421 lbs empty and can handle 193 lbs
being piled into it with full fuel.
With a 50-hp Rotax 503
under its cowling, it boasts a top speed of 120 mph and a
cruise speed of 100 mph (at 5200 rpm). Not too shabby, eh?
Other performance numbers for this conventional-geared
aircraft include its 350' takeoff roll (550' of runway is
needed to land), its 700-fpm rate of climb, and its 300sm
cruise range (fuel capacity is 11 gal).
It'll take you at least 650 hours - a more realistic number
is probably 800 hours to build; the company estimates that
you'll be $4000 poorer when it's all put together, but that
doesn't include the engine. A "comprehensive builder's
manual" is available. |
