Walking around Sun N Fun 2011 I noticed that there always seemed to be a quite a crowd around one specific light sport aircraft.

The plane a Renegade Falcon is a low wing side by side seating two place light sport aircraft using all composite construction, which is now being manufactured in the U.S. at the Renegade Light Sport Aircraft factory located in Lee's Summit MO.

"Doc" Bailey was kind enough to give me a tour of the plane and confessed that while the plane has been turning heads, it is the engine under the cowl that was drawing the crowds.

That engine is the new Lycoming 233 light sport aircraft engine. The engine on the Renegade Falcon is the first and only current installation of the Lycoming 233 on a lightsport aircraft.

Doc has been working with the Lycoming factory for well over a year now. His factory and aircraft were chosen by Lycoming for installation and prototyping of the engine. Once Doc has 100 hours on the engine it will be returned to the factory where they will tear it down. Then Lycoming will begin production of the engine for the light sport aircraft market.

The production 233 LSA engines from Lycoming will have fuel injection, electronic ignition, a generating system, electric start, be air cooled, direct drive engines. The factory has been able to reduce the engine weight of the 233 by 38 lbs over the 235, and the production engine is expected to come in at 208 lbs. and put out 116 HP.

The Lycoming 233 LS engine has a 2400 hour TBO, with service outlets available world wide. The 233 LS burns just under 5 gallons of fuel per hour.
