MD3 Rider
Added to Guinness Record-Holder's List and First
Italian-Built MD3 Rider Imported to U.S.
Space Coast Aviation Services ?
Space Coast Aviation Services president Ron
Bearer, importer and distributor of the Flyltalia MD3 Rider
was kept busy during Sun 'n Fun '08 showing off the MD3 and
giving interested people flights in the high-wing aircraft.
One passenger turned out to be a celebrity of sorts. "He
handed us a paper that listed news about him with pictures
of a few of the aircraft [he's flown in]," explains |
|
|
Space Coast Aviation Services president Ron
Bearer. "His name is Edwin Shackelton and he's from England.
He wanted to add the MD3 to his list of aircraft."
Turns out Shackleton is listed in Guinness World Records for
the most aircraft flown as a passenger. According to
Guinness, "As of January '07, Shackleton had flown in a
total of 841 different types of aircraft. His first flight
was in 1943 in a De Havilland DH 89 Dominie, and other
aircraft have included balloons, airships, helicopters and
microlights." "Of course we had to help," says Bearer,
laughing. "He was really nice."
Several weeks after the Sun 'n Fun airshow, Space Coast
Aviation Services and Flyltalia jointly announced the first
Italian-built MD3 Rider has been imported into the United
States and has been recognized to be in conformance with the
ASTM Standard 2245-06 for design and performance of a light
sport aircraft (LSA).
Bearer notes this is an historic moment for
Flyltalia. "Flyltalia has finally brought the MD3 Rider home
[to Italy] where its own workforce and practices can assure
top quality and quick response to manufacturing demands," he
says.
Bearer points out that although Flyltalia
has always owned the design, earlier MD3 Riders were
produced in the Czech Republic, the geographical and
political distances sometimes leading to inefficient lags in
communications, supplies, and various approvals. The new
streamlined operation is very much to his liking. "This
means we can now deliver in quantity and on schedule,"
Bearer says. |
