The Sandpiper was first introduced in 1983 and production
continued until 1986 when the company closed its doors. Then
in 1993 one of the original owners decided to reintroduce
the Sandpiper UL - 1 to the ultralight market.
The Sandpiper users aluminum construction in its fuselage
and wings, with the wings and tail sections covered in
conventional aircraft fabric covering material.
The Sandpiper has an empty weight of 254 pounds, and a gross
weight of 500 pounds. The Sandpiper is 7'6" high and 18 feet
long. The wingspan is 26'6" and the wing area is 148.9 ft.?.
This gives a wing loading of 3.3 pounds per square feet. |

It is reported to have been tested to +6 and
-4 Gs. Controls on the Sandpiper are standard stick and
rudder with a left-hand throttle. The original design was
covered in fabric. The aircraft on display and flying at Sun
N Fun 96 featured a metal covered wing. The Sandpiper UL 1
is powered by a twin cylinder Hirth engine of 30 hp. Climb
rate on the Sandpiper is 550 ft./m, cruise speed is 62 mph.
Fuel on board gives just over two hours of flight time.
The Sandpiper can be broken down for
transport in approximately 20 minutes. From kit the aircraft
took between 120 and 150 hours to build. |
