When I first
entered the sport of ultralight and light sport aircraft a
group that I was deeply involved with was the folks from
Advanced Aviation, Wayne and Kerry Richter. They designed
and were building a line of aircraft called the Cobra, a
wire braced ultralight, in both a single and two place
configuration. They then took on the production of the
Buccaneer XA, and Buccaneer II.
Kerry then when on to design the Buccaneer SX, The Carrerra
single and two place as well as the Explorer. Kerry then
left Advanced Aviation and contracted to design several
other aircraft for an offshore company. In the early 90's
Kerry, his father, and Paige Lynette a business partner set
out to design a new amphibious aircraft for the world
market. That aircraft - the Searey. |

The Searey was
introduced at Sun N Fun 1993, and sales went through the
roof! In fact there were so many orders taken at the show
that it took the factory nearly two years to deliver all the
orders, including mine! This year marks the 20th year that
the Searey has been in production.
The factory reports that
they have delivered over 600 kits to customers world wide,
with over 500 of those currently flying!
In 2010 the SeaRey underwent some major design changes in
preparation for entry into the light sport aircraft market.
One of the changes was the addition of a folding wing
option. At the same time the factory moved to it's new
location in Tavares Florida.
Then in 2011 Adam Yang a SeaRey
owner, became a working partner in Progressive Aerodyne. At
Sun N Fun 2012 the factory indicates they are in the final
process of completing certification for the SLSA category.
Currently Adam Yang is working two and three days a week
with Streamlined Design to get all "the i's dotted and t's
crossed."
When the process is finalized,
which is expected to be within the next month or two, SeaRey
enthusiasts in the U.S. will be able to buy the SeaRey as an
experimental amateur built aircraft, a light sport aircraft,
or as a special light sport aircraft.
