Just Aircraft
was at Sun N Fun and had on display and were flying two
recently completed customers aircraft. The first Highlander
had a paint scheme and colour chosen and designed by the
customers wife.
When the second customer saw it he said do the same with
mine! The Just Aircraft Highlander has a number of unique
features that make it stand out from the crowd.
The first is that it has folding wings, this can be done by
one person, in a matter of minutes, with no control cables,
or fuel system needing to be disconnected. |

Another
feature is that the seats can be folded down, giving a
sleeping area of six feet from the stick to the rear
bulkhead, so that the plane can actually be slept in. The
Highlander can also be equipped with a number of tire
options right on up to 23 inches.
The Highlander is available as a Special Light Sport
Aircraft, an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft, or as an
Experimental Amateurbuilt. The factory indicates the the
majority of Highlanders are built as experimental
amateurbuilt aircraft, because "it is cheaper for them to
purchase", and "as an experimental amateurbuilt they can work on
their own aircraft."
Building times on the Highlander range
start at approimately 350 hours. With all welding done by
the factory. The plane can be built in a two car garage,
with no special tools or skills required. The factory offers
a quick build option where the factory builds the
wings in factory jigs, meaning the customer does not have to
build wing jigs.
Power is supplied by the Rotax 912 ULS 100 HP engine, and if
you were at Sun N Fun you would have seen it climbing out
like a homesick angel! The factory has also equipped the
Highlander with the Rotax 912 Turbo as well as some other
automotive aircraft engine conversions. The factory reports
that on floats with the 100 HP Rotax engine the plane gets
off the water in 8 seconds, with two on board!
For pilots wanting a tri-cycle gear aircraft the Highlander
can be converted to a tri-cycle gear. Just Aircraft also
offers the Escapade which is a tri-gear, which has a 3 foot shorter wingspan,
smaller tailfeathers and rudder. The factory reports approximately 150
aircraft are currently flying worldwide.
For those of you who have internet access you can go to You
Tube and see some incredible footage of the Just Aircraft
Highlander skimming across the water on it's large Tundra
Tires. Another piece of video you have to see to believe is
a Highlander customer making a deadstick take off! That's
right a pilot takes off with no ENGINE from a mountain
ridge. He starts taxiing down the side of the ridge until he
takes off and then continues to fly deadstick down to the
valley floor, where he makes a deadstick landing on a sand
bar beside the river.
