Powered parachutes, and
powered para-gliders are two of the simplest forms of flight
that their are. They are also craft that are easy to learn
to fly.
So to be successful selling and servicing them, all you
really need is a good location to call home base.
Well the folks from
PlanetPPG.com have just that with a home base at the Pine
Island Airport,
13350 Morningstar Lane,
Bokeelia, Pine Island Florida.
Where they boast of "steady gulf breezes" "with flights over
scenic islands." There location also features on site tent
and RV camping as well as a number of hotels and motels
close by. |

PlanetPPG was at Sun N Fun
2011 with several of the aircraft that they offer sales and
service for. A very unique unit that they had on display was
the American made trike style powered parachute called the
Bullet, which is powered by the 26 HP Fresh Breeze Monster
engine.
The unit is a legal part 103 ultralight aircraft
weighing in at less than 254 lbs. with a fuel capacity of
less than 5 gallons. Since it is a legal ultralight it does
not require a license to fly although PlanetPPG still
insists that all pilot take training.
The Bullet is actually two
planes in one. That is it can be flown as powered
para-glider. All the pilot does is strap the unit directly
onto his back. It can also be flown as a powered parachute,
when the power unit is attached to the three wheeled PPC
trike. PlanetPPG reports that pilots from 155 to over 400
lbs have taken training. The major difference needed for the
extra weight is found in the different chutes and power
plants used to launch with. The Bullet powered parachute
unit also has an adjustable center of gravity system built
into it to accommodate different pilot weights.
For those wanting a little
more protection around them while flying the Bullet PPC
comes with a built in roll cage around the pilot. Which can
also be used for attaching video and photographic equipment.
The Bullet PPC uses a simple
hand throttle using a brake handle, which wraps around the
pilot's hand. Steering on the ground is via a steerable
nosewheel. While steering in the air is simple pull right to
go right, left to go left.
Training is done on a full
time basis at PlanetPPG. Monday and Tuesday pilots are
taught "kiting" which is a term used for launching the chute
into the air. They are also introduced to flying with
classroom instruction, books and manuals. Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday the student are introduced to flying,
via multiple tandem flights. During these flights control is
actually turned over to the student through a step of
progressive lessons until the student shows that he or she
comes to understand how and what they are doing.
PlanetPPG is one of the few
companies that I am aware of that does not require someone
interested in flying a powered parachute or para-glider to
have to buy a craft to learn how to fly. They train on their
own equipment and rent to students that have successfully
completed one of their courses.
