Light Sport Aircraft Pilot is a directory of aircraft that generally fit
into what are described as ultralight aircraft, advanced ultralight
aircraft,
light sport aircraft, experimental light sport aircraft, experimental
aircraft, amateur built aircraft, ELSA or homebuilt
aircraft in the United States and Canada. These include
weight shift aircraft, more commonly known as trikes,
powered parachutes, and powered para-gliders.

Several years ago I had the
privilege to interview Randall Fishman on his ElectraFlyer
trike, then again on his ElectraFlyer-C, and then his two
seat ElectraFlyer-X. To my knowledge Randall was the first
to introduce electric power to a human operated aircraft.
To do it he had to develop a battery system, and a motor
system, that was lightweight, powerful, and reliable. Which
he did basically operating from his own pockets.
This year Randall was at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo with
two new electric powered aircraft. The first was a small
single place ultralight trike, powered by Randall's
lightweight electric motor and controller. |

The craft is lightweight, and the pilot has
the ability to retract the main landing gear in flight. With
the gear retracted and a small pod installed Randall expects
to see exception performance from the craft.
Once the owner has finished flying for the day, the trike
can be completely folded down by one person in about 5
minutes, and stored in the trunk of a car. The second
electric aircraft was an ultralight motorglider.
This all
composite craft uses a 22.5 kilowatt motor, which weighs in
at 23 lbs.
Randall is continuing his research and development on
electric propulsion systems using Part 103 ultralight
aircraft, because there is no "red tape, or hoops to jump
through" like there is in the light sport aircraft category.
