Light Sport Aircraft Pilot is a directory of aircraft that generally fit
into what are described as ultralight aircraft, advanced ultralight
aircraft,
light sport aircraft, experimental light sport aircraft, experimental
aircraft, amateur built aircraft, ELSA or homebuilt
aircraft in the United States and Canada. These include
weight shift aircraft, more commonly known as trikes,
powered parachutes, and powered para-gliders.

I have done a number of interviews with Chris
Esposito of the Light Sport Group. Chris's group runs a
flight training school in Florida, and produces the A/V ator
HD camera which I use for the incabin / in air video shot
for www.aircraftreporters.tv.
This year Chris was at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo with
something completely different, a diagnostic tool for use on
the Rotax 912 series of aircraft engines.
In essence the unit called Dr. RoTech can be
used to test everything on the Rotax electrical system from
a cracked or loose wire to a generating or charging coil.
Doing all of the checking while the engine is still mounted
on the plane! The device simply plugs into the ignition
module, and an LED light indicates green for go, or red for
fail. |

For those that have had to do this process
with an OHM meter, you know the kind of time and work
involved in removing and installing everything to be able to
do the checks. With Dr. RoTech everything can be check in as
little as five minutes!
Factory literature indicates that Dr. RoTech can perform all
the required measurements of BRP-Rotax 912/914 Heavy
Maintenance Manual section 74 paragraph 3.12:
Generator coil (on stator)
Charging coil (on stator)
Trigger coil (A&B)
Primary ignition coil (A&B)
Secondary ignition coil
Spark plug connector
Ignition switch
Engine ground
