Over the last 10 years or so
I have had the opportunity to interview Dennis Carley of
U-Fly-It at both Sun N Fun and the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo.
Some of those interview were on awards that he had won for
aircraft that he had on display, others dealt with new
products or services that he was introducing. Again this
year Dennis was in Sebring for the show with two new
aviation products.
The first was his all new introduction into the lightsport
aircraft field the Criquet Storch, which is covered in
another story in this series. |

The second was a brand new installation of
the HKS twin cylinder 80 HP turbocharged aircraft engine on
a Quicksilver Sport 2S. Dennis is actually doing two installations
of the HKS 700 T, both are on Quicksilver Sport 2S float planes.
While there are no major modifications to the airframe to
make the switch, Dennis has added an extra set of rear down
tubes to the rear of the plane, (something we have been
doing for years, when we switch a Quicksilver Sport 2S over to
floats).
The HKS Turbo installation takes Dennis
about a week to complete. As of the end of January 2011,
Dennis hadn't flown the plane yet, but has done ground run
ups etc. using a 71 three blade Aerolux prop, which Dennis
distributes. According to Dennis this engine and prop
combination produces "phenomenal thrust" "it literally takes
three of us to hold the plane in place when we are running
it up." "I am really looking forward to getting it up in the
air, it is really going to be a great performer."
The advantages to the HKS Turbo is that it
has 15 more horsepower than the Rotax 582, from initial
testing the thrust is considerably higher, fuel consumption
is about 50% less, and from a sales point a lot of pilots
want a lightweight, reliable and powerful four stroke.
Initially HKS has put a 500 hour TBO on the engine, but
Dennis expects that to increase as the engine proves itself
with time.
