The Hansen Air Group had the latest in
their stable of aircraft, the FK12 Comet bi-plane on display
at the 2011 U.S. Sport Aviation Expo. Well they had the main
body of the craft on display.
According to Mitch Hansen they should have the whole craft
plus three different cockpit enclosures, together and flying
at Sun N Fun. The FK12 Comet joins the FK9 MK V, and the
Italian designed Skyarrow in Hansen's line of light sport
aircraft.
Hansen also expects to be introducing a new low wing light
sport aircraft, specifically designed for the flight
training environment, from FK Light Planes sometime in 2012.

The FK 12 Comet is a tandem seating two
seater, bi-plane with dual center mounted stick and rudder
controls, with left handle throttles. A single lever hand
brake is located on the rear stick. Flaps are deployed from
a handle located on the left hand side of the cockpit, just
in front of the rear pilot seat. The plane is equipped with
four full span ailerons, which also act as flaps. Control
linkages to the ailerons are push pull rods similar to that
used on other
aerobatic style aircraft.
Pilots enter the cockpits from the left hand
side of the plane, to aid in entrance and exit the factory
has designed a hideaway step into the side of the fuselage.
The pilot puts his foot into the step and then swings his
other leg over the side of the
fuselage, onto the seat and then bringing his other leg in
and sliding into the plane.
The
cockpit
is 23 inches wide at the narrowest point which is the
shoulders, but it widens out another three or four inches
into the seating area. The front pilot has even more room as
the fuselage body widens out in the front seating area.
The plane is a bi-plane, and has the
unique feature of folding wings for ease of storage, and is
available with three quick release and installation
canopies. A single seat racer model, a two seat open cockpit
aircraft with small windshields, and a sliding bubble canopy
that covers both pilots.
Both pilots have access to individual instrument panels, and
the area directly above the front pilot is designed to fold
upward to allow the canopy to swing outward. There is a
small storage compartment located behind the headrest of the
rear pilot's seat.
Power on the unit on display was a 912 S Rotax 100 HP
aircraft engine. Which gives the plane a cruise of 90 to 95
knots. Climb is an impressive 1200 feet per minute with
stall coming in at around 35 knots. The fifteen gallon fuel
tank is located forward of the pilot enclosure on the
firewall.
With the Rotax 912 S the plane is not
capable of sustained inverted flight, but Mitch indicates
that in the near future the FK12 Comet will be coming with
the Lycoming 233 which will allow owners of the plane to
explore the boundaries of just what the plane is capable of.
The plane is available as a lightsport
aircraft, ready to fly. Mitch indicates the plane is
available in Europe as an amateur built aircraft and the
plan is to have it available in the experimental amateur
built category in the U.S. as well. The plane has been in
production for over eight years now and as of January 2011
there are nearly 100 FK12 Comets flying worldwide.
