The U.S. Lightsport Aircraft industry now has an "Ambassador" to the Bahamas. Mike Z from Breezer Aircraft U.S.A. who operates out of his base in Plant City Florida was recently appointed by  Greg Rolle from the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation in the Bahamas as an aviation Ambassador.

Mike is now one of three pilots in the United States with the "Ambassador" title. Mike's is there to help any pilots, general aviation, or light sport with questions, or problems that they may have on flying to the Bahamas.

As Mike explains it the Bahamas government wants a few more "touch points in the U.S." so that pilots with concerns, questions, or comments can talk to Mike and then he can relay them, looking for solutions and improvements in the system. Mike has a "direct line" into the government so that problems and concerns can be addressed fairly quickly.

When the Bahamas government became the first country to allow lightsport aircraft and their pilots to fly in their airspace, Mike decided to be one of the first to do it. So in September of 2010 he made his first flight down in a Breezer to the Bahamas.

That first trip has given him a unique perspective of what is necessary for a lightsport aircraft pilot to fly to the Bahamas. Mike who lived on his boat for many years in the Bahamas, has now flown down three times (January 2011). From Mike's home base in Plant City the flight to the Bahamas is just over 2 hours. In 2010 at Airventure the Bahamas government announced that they were going to allow Sport Pilots to operate in their airspace without a medical, and invited all interested to make the flight. Mike says "I was really excited to be able to go back to a beautiful country, with some great people in it, "making it a great weekend getaway for anybody in Florida."

He then used that knowledge to assist a group of Lightsport Aircraft pilots to fly down to the Bahamas in December 2010. Seventeen aircraft flew down as a group. Fifteen in the group had never been to the Bahamas before.

So it was quite an experience for them when they were met "on the ramp with rum punch and com-fritters, before even going into customs.

"During this flight Mike met an old friend of his who was now "a councillor for the island, sort of like a mayor" invited me down for New Years so we flew back down the first of the year. " It is just so easy to go over there, and the weather is always great."
