Light Sport Aircraft Pilot is a directory of aircraft that generally fit
into what are described as ultralight aircraft, advanced ultralight
aircraft,
light sport aircraft, experimental light sport aircraft, experimental
aircraft, amateur built aircraft, ELSA or homebuilt
aircraft in the United States and Canada. These include
weight shift aircraft, more commonly known as trikes,
powered parachutes, and powered para-gliders.

Last year I did an interview on an automotive aircraft
engine conversion based on the Honda Fit, being offered by a
company in Florida. The engine had been chosen for its
lightness and fuel efficiency. The engine at that time was
being offered by
Jan Eggenfellner of Eggenfellner Engines.
While the engine and company that produce it are the same
the names have changed to the Viking Aircraft Engines and
Viking Engine.
By redesigning the crankcase cover of the Honda Fit engine the
Viking Aircraft Engine factory was able to
shave four lbs of the engine weight, for an all out weight dry
of
178 lbs.
This weight includes the engine, starter, and 35 amp
alternator. Other weight saving components produced by the
Viking Aircraft Engines include the valve cover which weighs
in at only one pound compared to the original five pounds.
The entire exhaust system including the muffler weighs only 1.49 lbs! |

The other end of the engine, (opposite the prop) has also
been redesigned to allow for a very lightweight but strong
motor mount that has a number of configurations that can be
used.
It
has four mounting points towards the center of the engine,
two on the top and two on the bottom, which are located in the same
position that you would
find on late model Jabiru engines. Plus the factory has
added an additional four mounting points on the outside of
the engine.
The water pump, and alternator
are run off the engine using a 6 groove serpentine belt. The
Viking puts out 110 HP at 5800 rpm. with cruise on the
engine coming in at
between 4800 and 5200. Jan points out that if a customer
purchases a Viking aircraft engine and years down the road
had a problem with it because of a prop strike, or something
like that, the cost of
purchasing a low time Honda Fit engine, and then changing
out the parts back into the Viking engine would be in the
range of $1,000.
Viking
Aircraft Engines are currently flying on Vans RV-12, the
Zenith CH-750, Sonex, and the Just Aircraft Highlander, with
a number of other installations currently in process of
being installed. The engine once retrofitted with the
accessories needed for the conversion are equivalent in size
and weight to the Jabiru 3300, the UL260 and UL350, the
Lycoming 233, Rotax 912. 912S and Rotax 914.
It was interesting to
listen to Jan talk about TBO on the engine.
He pointed out very correctly that if you have had this
engine for 10 or 15 years, which would be the average TBO
time for a pilot flying 100 hours a year. With the
advancement in engine technology 15 years from now your not
going to want this engine! 15 years from now your going to
have an engine that is probably half the weight, twice the
power and who knows with advancement in battery technology
may not even be gas based!
