While touring the grounds of Airventure 2010
I came upon a very unique single place helicopter called the
Dragonfly DF1.
It was "unique" because when you first look
at it you don't see an aircraft engine powering it.
That is because the Dragonfly DF1 is powered by rockets
attached to the tips of it's blades. These rockets are
powered by a hydrogen peroxide, which according to the
designer
Ricardo Cavalcanti are environmentally
friendly as they produce no pollution. |

The tip rockets are supplied with fuel from
tanks located beside the pilot compartment. The fuel is
routed up through the fuselage to the center of the blades,
then along the inside of the blades to the rockets at the
tips. This system results in near vibration free operation.
It also increases the Dragonfly's ease of operation
because
there is no motor torque, which means the tail is only used
as a flight control, and not for countering torque.
The bare bones version of the Dragonfly DF1
weighs in at 234 lbs, has a top speed of 115 mph and a climb
rate of over 2,000 feet per minute. With the standard 18.5
gallon fuel tank it has about 60 minutes of flight time,
which can be doubled with the addition of an optional tank.A
Dragonfly DF1 is can be equipped with floats and a ag spray
system. A two place version is currently under development
and is expected to be flying early next year.
Other options include higher horsepower engines, a
windshield, canopy, rescue hammock, cargo compartment,
autopilot, winch, navigation and landing lights.
