HKS 700 T 80 HP turbo
charged aircraft engine on Earthstar Odyssey
|
Over the years of covering this sport I have noticed that
the Earthstar Aircraft have been used as a test bed for a
great many aircraft engines.
In fact Mark Bierle owner of Earthstar indicates that his
craft have been powered by over 100 different engines over
the last 35 years. Once again one of his aircraft was
chosen to feature the brand new HKS 700 T 80 HP
twin cylinder four stroke electronic fuel
injected, turbo charged aircraft engine.
At Airventure 2010 Mark had nearly
100 hours of flying on the engine, which includes a 2,000
mile round trip from his home base to the Arlington Airshow
in Washington, plus the trip to Oshkosh and by the time you
read this he will again be back home.
According to Mark the turbo installation uses the same
Odyssey motor mount as the standard HKS engine, and the only
thing he had to do differently was mount the computer and
sensors for manifold pressure and outside air temperature
etc. necessary for the fuel injection. |

Mark indicates that he feels
the aircraft puts out an honest 80 HP all the way from sea
level to 16,000 feet. According to Mark he "loves the
electronic fuel injection because it allows him to tune the
engine to it's most efficient settings, and once set will
stay there." "The fuel injection also allows the 80 HP
engine to burn the same amount of fuel as the standard 60 HP
HKS." This has two advantages the fact that a pilot doesn't
have to carry around the extra fuel that a 912 would burn
and when compared to the Rotax 912 80 HP engine, is
considerably lighter allowing pilots more payload.
Mark reports he is very happy
with the engine, and like any NEW engine installation he has
worked with, there are some minor fuel related problems that
he is working with the factory to rectify. He also says that
the HKS line of engines have proven, by a large margin, to be the lowest maintenance related engines that he has
ever worked with.
