Several years ago Savage Aircraft Sales based at the Manitowoc County Wisconsin Airport introduced the Savage Classic and the Savage Cruiser to the light sport aircraft market at Airventure.

This year Bill Canino of Sportair USA LC the U.S. distributor for the Savage line of aircraft introduced two new models the  iCub and the Bush iCub.

I have interviewed Bill on his Sting S3 and Sirius lightsport aircraft, and during those interviews he indicated that he was in the market to add a "Cub like aircraft" to his stable.

In the Savage line he has found a "Cub like aircraft that is both affordable and performance oriented."

With the latest addition the iCub and Bush iCub adding even more versatility.

With the installation of the iPad glass panel display pilots now have access to GPS navigation, an artificial horizon, airspeed indicator, compass, altimeter, and updated weather information. The iCub has a special mounting bracket in the middle of the dash to mount the iPad. The Bush iCub which is the "off road version" comes standard with 26 inch wheels, and heavy reinforced landing gear.

The iPad has 965 megabytes of storage, and has thousands of apps available for it. Bill ran me through a little exercise where a pilot lands his plane, sets up his tent, and his buddy breaks his leg, there is an app for that, then while in the tent waiting for help to arrive they watch a movie that has been downloaded, because there is an app for that! The applications for the iPad in the iCub are nearly endless, from how to tie a knot, to what kind of tracks are these! In addition the co-pilots instruments are on an i Phone IV.

The iCub shows the foresight that Sportair USA has, when you consider that the iPad was only introduced a couple of months ago, and already they have a plane designed around it, programmed with applications specific to aviation. With all of the apps available for download, it means that they can all be used in the air while flying without breaking an rules or regulations.

The Bush iCub which is the "off road version" comes standard with 26 inch wheels, and heavy reinforced landing gear. Bill is in the midst of setting up a school to teach bush plane or "off road flying." The training system will feature a 10 level approach to flying the Bush iCub.

The iCub series of aircraft weigh in at around 700 lbs and are all powered by the venerable Rotax 912 S 100 HP aircraft engine. With the 24 gallons of fuel in the wing tanks the plane has over 4 hours of endurance. They are equipped with standard dual stick and rudder controls, with a single flap handle, dual throttles and toe brakes.

Stall comes in between 28 and 30 knots with the standard vortex generators on the wings. Cruise is 85 to 90 knots with the two blade fixed pitch propeller. Bill indicates that a number of ground adjustable propellers will be available shortly.

For float plane, and amphib float plane operation the plane can be ordered with a door on either side, standard the plane comes with a door on the right hand side. The door(s) can be opened or close in flight at airspeeds below 60 knots.
