Just Aircraft Escapade powered by Bush King VW aircraft engine conversion

A manufacturer that has been making inroads into the lightsport and experimental light sport aircraft category is Just Aircraft. There are a number of reasons for this, it's rugged bush plane look and feel, it's proven 4130 welded fuselage construction, it's adaptability to floats and ski's and oh yes it has folding wings.

Over the years I have flown the Highlander with a number of engine options including the Rotax 912S and Jabiru. To see the performance of the Just Aircraft Highlander and Escapade is not enough, you have to experience it! At Airventure 2010 the factory pilot demonstrated a near vertical take off in less than five feet. He applied flaps, engaged the brakes, lifted the tail, released the brakes and literally lifted off!

There are a number of videos on You Tube featuring the Highlander, taking off from some pretty hostile terrain, skimming down a river with the wheels hydroplaning across the water, and even a dead stick TAKEOFF and LANDING!

This year at Airventure the factory introduced a new engine option, that was installed on a customer built Escapade, the Bush King 2.3 L EFI engine with a belt reduction drive system. They are also offering a 135 HP turbo version.

The engine is a 2.3 litre VW based aircraft engine conversion, which has been built to the racing standards that you would find in sand rail vehicles used in the BAHA 500. But rather than running the engine up at 6,000 rpm it is built to run at 4260 rpm. The engine is comes with a belt reduction drive system that can be ordered from a 1.6 ratio to 2.1. The standard engine uses automotives spark plugs with a four pack coil system. It is also available with optional dual ignition.

The engine comes standard with fuel injection that automatically compensates for altitude. The engine installed wet, with drive, exhaust, dual fuel pumps, wiring etc. comes in at 184 lbs. Fuel consumption at cruise is reported to be just over 3 gallons per hour. Regular operating costs are oil changes requiring only regular 30 weight oil and automotive oil filter, and 4 automotive spark plugs.

Current TBO is estimated at 1,000 hours with an estimated base cost of $1,000.00, which "anyone who has mechanical experience working on engines will be able to do."

Engines are normally in stock for immediate delivery, with custom orders taking 4 to 6 weeks.
