Mike Lecka's Harley Davidson aircraft engine
conversion.
If you are an American looking for an "made in America" aircraft engine
you need look no farther than your local Harley Davidson motorcycle
dealer. At least that is what Mike Lecka of Fayetteville NC did.
Mike who had a Lancair 320 and built an RV 4 first got the idea to put
a Harley engine in his plane in "2000 when they came out with their
counter balanced crankshaft."
The engine Mike has is 1450 cc but a 1550 cc of over 100 hp is
available now. "For $3995.00 plus $64.00 shipping Harley shipped his brand
new engine in a wooden box complete, except for carb, starter, ignition
and exhaust.

Mike then added a Nissan flywheel and starter from his local auto
recycler, and will be adding a Cessna 150 carb with mixture control and
carb heat, as well as an Electro Air twin ignition system.
The total package as he has it now comes in at less than 200 lbs. On
his test stand he demonstrated the engine running it from an idle up to
3800 rpm. With his direct drive system and a the three blade Warp Drive
prop the stand was really pulling on the tie down straps!
According to Mike Harley engines were popular aircraft engine
conversions in the 20's and 30's. This year a conversion was on display at
Bike Week in Daytona Florida, and an EAA chapter is just finishing up a 3
year restoration project on a vintage 1930's Harley powered craft which
they will have on display at Airventure.
