In 2008 Mark Stull an ultralight aircraft designer, builder,
and pilot demonstrated his Lucky II single place ultralight aircraft at Sun N
Fun. The Lucky II was a cute little bi-plane in a pusher configuration, with a
twin tail boom arrangement and was Mark's 4th design.
This year Mark arrived at Sun N Fun with a new design, the 7th he built, the
Lucky Stars II.
The Lucky Stars II is a single seat
aircraft, again in a pusher configuration but instead of a
biplane the Lucky Stars II is a wire braced, high wing
monoplane. |

According to Mark he has been building
different designs "looking for the perfect ultralight" and
feels he may have it in his latest creation. Mark had felt
the longer, wider wing added so much extra weight and
required so much more strength that "you wouldn't come out
ahead" but now that he has designed and built one he has
found you "definitely do come out ahead!" "The 9.5 to 1
aspect ratio of the Lucky Stars II is so efficient I can
hardly believe it!" "It shows up in every aspect of flight,
it climbs like crazy, it cruises along at 50 mph on very
little power, using only 1.6 gallons per hour.
Mark has had to derate the engine, install
a throttle stop and use an oversized propeller to keep the
plane under the legal part 103 speed limit. It stalls at 30
mph with no flaps and 22 mph with full flaps.
Mark indicates the craft weighs 225 lbs.
and is rated for 3.5 g's positive an 1.5 negative.
It features aluminum tube rivet together
construction, controls are standard aircraft controls, with
right hand stick, left hand throttle and rudder pedals.
Ground steering is via a steerable nose wheel. Mark has
repowered his new design with a 340 Kawasaki two stroke
engine using a belt reduction drive system. This has made
the plane "really quiet and comfortable to fly."
Mark indicates that he has built a new
plane every winter for the past 6 years, but this design has
presented him with a problem. It flies so good that he
doesn't know how to improve it.
While Mark has no plans on bringing the
plane out on to the market, or in selling plans, he can be
