One of the most successful
ways for a group to be successful is to get young people
involved at an early age.
The Boy Scouts of America's Aviation Explorer Post 491 a
Birmingham Alabama area youth group, with the aid of Cypress
Aviation and the Experimental Aviation Association realize
this and have been engaged in a project to introduce youth
to aviation.
The aim of the project is to educate youth to the production
of aircraft and aerodynamics.

At Sun N Fun 2010
representatives from the group were on hand with a Kitfox
III project they were in the process of completing. I had
the opportunity to talk to 14 year old Victoria Ratliff
about her involvement in the project. Victoria's group of 15
kids and 7 adults, taking a basic Kitfox kit and completing
it to the stage that it is will be ready to fly.
Taking time from their weekends Victoria's group learned
about aircraft construction including building the wings,
aircraft covering, rib stitching, engine installation,
welding and painting. During each phase of the
construction process industry experts relative to that phase
of the project coached, instructed and inspected the work of
the students.
The
group is about half way through the two year project. When
the plane is completed it will be raffled off, with proceeds
from the raffle going towards the purchase of another kit,
and any extra money will go towards starting a second
project which will go towards a scholarship or A&P mechanics
course.
