Aeroplanes Morane Saulnier WWI replica fighter aircraft kit
|
For over 12 years now every time I have
attended Sun N Fun Robert Baslee of Airdrome Aeroplanes has
shown up with a new design.
This year was no exception as he had a beautiful Morane
Saulnier on display at Paradise City. This makes the 19th
aircraft he has added to his fleet of WWI replica aircraft.
The aircraft he had on display was actually built for the
movie Amelia. In the opening scene Amelia as a young girl is
seen waving at a WWI aircraft, and this is the aircraft that
was used in that scene.
The shooting for the scene was actually done about 100 miles
north of Toronto Ontario in the middle of a wheat field
which was used to represent Kansas in the 20's.

This is the second time that Airdrome
Aeroplanes aircraft have been featured in movies with
several being used in the movie Flyboys.
The Morane Saulnier offered by Airdrome is a
3/4 scale replica kit. The kit uses aluminum rivet, bolt
together construction with all CNC machined and welded parts
done by the factory. Robert reports the average building
time is between 350 and 400 hours, using basic hand tools.
The kit comes with every part marked,
every tube is precut labeled and part numbered. A
constructional DVD is offered with the purchase of a kit
that takes the builder from start to finish in the building
process.
The Morane Saulnier at Sun N Fun was
powered by an engine developed by Gene and Larry Smith of
Valley Engineering. It starts out as a twin cylinder, four
stroke, 36 hp Generac generator engine which they do a
conversion to and add a belt reduction drive that they also
designed. With this combination the engine is able to turn
an 80 inch by 56 pitch prop. The engine weighs in complete
with prop at around 118 lbs and after Valley Engineering
modifications puts out approximately 50 hp.
Airdrome Aeroplanes has been producing WWI
and ultralight aircraft kits for over 21 years and have
aircraft flying world wide.
