Quicksilver MXL II first experimental light sport aircraft to be registered and flown in Qatar

At Sun N Fun 2010 I had the opportunity to talk to Todd Ellefson who is responsible for sales and tech support at Quicksilver Aircraft. A family from Doha, Qatar was in Rochester Minnesota, which is the home of the Mayo Clinic, and where Todd lives.

The family was there with their father undergoing heart surgery, and while waiting for them to recover they contacted Todd to go up for a ride in a Quicksilver.

Todd obliged and shortly after the intro flight he was contacted again.  This time they wanted learn more about light aviation and asked to take flight lessons. The recovery time was two weeks so for the 10 days straight Todd and Nasar did dual flight training.

The group then returned to Qatar, and Todd received a call from Nasar's uncle. He essentially wanted to order a kit and once the kit had passed through Qatar?s C.A.A. (the group responsible for aviation Qatar), he wanted two more. Todd was aware that the C.A.A. would accept an aircraft that had passed through the stringent European standards, which meant that an MXL Sport II qualified.

Todd arranged for the kit to be shipped. It was assembled over several months by a young A & P mechanic from the Phillipines working nights and weekends. When it was finished Todd flew to Qatar to inspect the plane and check out the new owner. The plane was kept in an Air-conditioned hangar at the only GA airport in the country. Todd indicated that after about 5 hours the new owner, who also owns a Cessna 172, was ready to solo.

The MXL II was the first experimental aircraft ever registered and flown in Qatar, and it was also the first to fly in the 2nd annual Qatar air show. Up until about a year ago General Aviation aircraft and sport planes were not allowed.
