HKS was at Sun N Fun 2010 with the first
install of an HKS 80 horsepower turbocharged engine. The
plane an amphibious experimental aircraft called the
Corsario Mark IV from Brazil.
The Corsario was chosen because float planes are known for
their high power demands, both to get off the water and in
flying.The plane which would
normally have been powered by a Rotax 582, was ordered from
the factory without an engine or engine mount so that an HKS
mounting system could be developed for the plane.
Since the bolt pattern on the HKS bed mount is the same as a
Rotax 582 the initial engine mount conversion was relatively
simple. |

Because the customer plans on doing a lot of
travelling with the plane in a trailer, it was important
that everything for the engine be connected to the root
tube, so that nothing would have to be disconnected during
removal of the wings. The 80 HP Turbo version of the HKS
engine is a totally redesigned engine. HKS has lowered the
compression ratio 8.8 to 1 verses 11 to 1 of the original,
stronger crankshaft to handle the increase to 80 hp.
The engine has been developed to have a top
rpm of 5300 with a cruise of 5,000 rpm using a 2.8-1
reduction drive. Fuel consumption is 2.5 gallons per hour
this is accomplished by the use of a computer and fuel
injection.
HKS reports that there are five other
OEM's that have recently taken delivery of their engines and
are expected to have those aircraft flying by Airventure
2010.
